Staying on top of the manufacturing industry requires adapting to the concept of “Industry 4.0” – the fourth Industrial Revolution. Manufacturing has gone from steam-powered factories to production lines powered by electricity, to digitally driven operations. Industry 4.0 includes digitization of products and services. Digitization uses interconnectivity, automation, and data to drive customer satisfaction, productivity, and supply-chain optimization.
The manufacturing industry faced big challenges during the pandemic. Worker safety considerations and staffing, supply chain, operations, finances, tariffs, and trade were all affected. Manufacturers had to pivot and become more resilient. Many workers on the floor were laid off as demand for goods decreased, and supply-chain disruptions caused slowdowns and financial losses.1
As recovery from the pandemic continues, manufacturing continues to adapt – and the future looks brighter for the industry and for manufacturing professionals. n fact, well over a third of manufacturing companies said it’s harder to find skilled workers now than it was in 2018. As of spring 2021, the industry is growing at its fastest pace in half a century.2
See how the manufacturing field is growing and rebounding in 2021 according to the Center for Manufacturing Research:
- For every $1 spent in manufacturing, $2.79 is added to the economy.
- There were nearly 13 million manufacturing workers as of March 2021.
- Manufacturing works earned, on average, over $88,000 annually. Of those workers, 92% were eligible for health insurance.
- A projected 4 million manufacturing jobs will be needed.
- Exports of manufactured goods have grown quickly in 2021.
- More than 60% of research and development in the private sector is done in the manufacturing industry.
Many manufacturers already have embraced Industry 4.0 principles and trends. Digital technology, interconnectivity, and use of real-time data, among other trends, appear to improve collaboration among departments, vendors, products, and the people who work in the field. This improves productivity and processes. These growth drivers bode well for manufacturers who are able to keep up with 4.0 practices. At the same time, hands-on manufacturing jobs for welders and machinists continue to be in demand.
